Dunedin Railway station

Dunedian Railway Building

The volcanic past of Dunedin has created natural domes and vents where some of the finest views of our city can be enjoyed. We leave Port Chalmers and approach Dunedin from the north climbing above the harbour to a fantastic viewpoint of the Otago Peninsula.  As we get close to the city we take a brief stop at Baldwin Street and the historic Dunedin Railway Station before we make our way out onto the Otago Peninsula, meandering along the ‘low road’ towards Portobello the evidence of Dunedin’s ‘fiery’ past is obvious.  Turning south we leave the sealed roads behind and travel through the scenic inlets where the tide regularly replaces nutrients that attract waders and waterfowl to this remote and scenic area.

Sea Lions on beach

A visit to Dunedin in incomplete until you have been on one of our beaches, we’ll take you to arguably the most scenic beach where the rare NZ sea-lion can often be found basking in the sunshine.  We make another stop at a scenic lookout where we walk through a tunnel of Macrocarpa to enjoy panoramic views of the Otago Peninsula and in particular, Cape Saunders, one of only two landmarks Captain James Cook logged in his journal as he travelled around NZ. The journey continues south along the high road of the Otago Peninsula as we head towards St Clair where we will briefly stop to sample a slice of Dunedin’s laid back lifestyle.

Dunedin octagon

Finally we make our way back to Port Chalmers (clients on the morning trip can be dropped of at the Octagon i- site if required , but they must find their own way back to the cruise ship in the afternoon.

NB: Viewing of Sea Lions and or Fur Seals on the beaches  is expected but not guaranteed due to these animals being in the wild and free to come and go as they please.
