Sculptured out of volcanic activity and thousands of years in the making, Wai-O-Tapu is considered to be New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attraction. You are introduced to a uniquely different natural landscape – the key to what you see lies below the surface – one of the most extensive geothermal systems in New Zealand such as the spectacular Lady Knox Geyser and the world renown Champagne Pool
At the Huka Falls, the Waikato River which is normally 100 meters wide, is squeezed through a 20 meter wide gorge and over a 20 meter drop. Every second up to 220,000 liters of water gushes through the gorge and shoots out over 8 meters beyond to create a beautiful blue/green pool. The name Huka is the Maori word for ‘foam’, which is appropriate as the falling water and rapids certainly resembles foam, especially under flooding conditions.
Huka Prawn Park
On the banks of the beautiful Waikato River, just minutes from Taupo town centre, you will find the iconic and unique family playground, of Huka Prawn Park. With acres of land dedicated to the production of New Zealand fresh water prawns, and pure family fun. Come in and learn how we utilize Mother Nature to incubate & nurture the young prawns, or maybe you would like to try your hand at Prawn fishing. The restaurant will even cook your catch for you and they are just delicious. Lake Taupo lies in a caldera created by a super volcanic eruption which occurred approximately 26,500 years ago and Mount Ruapehu today proudly stands as the backdrop of the lake to enhance its vista.
