Today we travel south, out of the Auckland inner city onto the motorway. We travel for approx 1 hour when we begin to follow the mighty Waikato River. This river is New Zealand’s longest river and winds some 425 kilometres throughout the centre of the north island. The name Waikato comes from the Maori language and translates as flowing water.
The Waikato River has spiritual meaning for various local iwi, including the Tainui tribe , who regard it as a source of their mana or pride. The widely-respected marae of Turangawaewae is close to the river banks at Ngaruawahia. Turangawaewae is home of our present Maori King. We head west at this point and drive through magnificent farm land, bypassing Hamilton City, before arriving in Waitomo.
The district is rural and predominantly a dairy farming region. The area’s main industries include farming, forestry, and quarrying. The area is known for the famous Waitomo Caves. If you are looking for a world class experience, deep underground in the heart of the area are a series of unique caves that will take your breath away.
Today you will enter the Glowworm Caves, you’ll see a deep limestone shaft and a soaring subterranean cathedral that will leave you speechless before you hop aboard your little boat and be enchanted by the thousands of magical glow-worms above as you glide gently and quietly through these world famous Caves. Glowworms are unique to New Zealand & thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as your expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves’ historical and geological significance.
We can offer you the opportunity to enjoy a New Zealand style lunch down on the farm at Roselands Farm & Gardens. They cook your cut of meat or fish to your individual perfection and the salads. There is opportunity to have a quick farm tour and maybe experience a rabbit shearing demonstration. These rabbits are rare white Angora who cannot shed their own fleece so 4 times a year they get shorn like a sheep.
After lunch on your return travels we stop at the Otorohanga Kiwi house to view New Zealand flightless nocturnal rare bird the Kiwi. There is also opportunity to view the pre historic ancient reptile the Tuatara which are hiding within an enclosure along with some of our native birds.
