The eruption of Mount Tarawera completely altered what was a sumptuous lifestyle and thriving community for Tuhourangi, the local Maori tribe. With their land now uninhabitable the survivors eventually relocated to Whakarewarewa, where they rebuilt their lives and independence.  This afternoon you get to meet descendants of those survivors at New Zealand’s only tribally owned and managed, living, Maori and geothermal village.
