Description
On this day 136 years ago Mount Tarawera erupted and sent ash and debris all over the surrounding area. There were Māori villages on the slopes of the mountain which were completely or partially covered in ash during the four hours that the ash rained down. Our tour today takes us to Te Wairoa village which has been restored so that you can experience some idea of the situation that night. A tour through the museum will give you an insight to what happened, then wander the archaeological sites down to the waterfall and view lake Tarawera.
