The Winter Festival of Light will transform Coromandel’s main street. The Illume festival was designed to combine with the 200-year anniversary celebration of the arrival of the H.M.S. Coromandel.
The festival will be exciting, illuminating and engaging, telling stories about our history, our natural environment and our rich art and culture through innovative audio-visual performances, lanterns, street installations, light, and colour. Saturday night is the spectacular street parade, street party and fireworks display. A festival, with live music, projections, street performers, lights, great food, fun and laughter.

Overnight Coromandel – Olive Motel
Enjoy breakfast before we depart Coromandel and take what’s called The 309 Road. It is a 22km gravel road in Coromandel and there are a couple of theories as to why it is named that. One being that it took a horse and cart 309 minutes to travel it but thankfully we are not travelling by horse & cart. A little way along the road we will come to Stuarts place and hopefully we get to catch up with him and his pet wild pigs.
A little further on is the beautiful Waiau Falls and Kauri Grove. We will take a short walk to enjoy these magnificent specimen trees. If time permits, we will take a brief stop at Egan Park and enjoy n amazing display of Nikau Palms. The 309 Road presents a largely unpeopled landscape, bordered by river, backdropped with birdsong. It is a place to slow down and soak up the sensory experience of a subtropical rainforest, with plenty of places to pause along the way.
We will stop a while at Coroglen where you can refuel with food for lunch.
Tea, Coffee, Beer with a hot meal, cold salad, fries or just a muffin. There will be something for everybody. Come on in and meet Michelle & Jed. This is a real country pub not like the city ones.
Continuing past Whenuakite, Tairua, then Whangamata for another brief stop. From here is will be directly back home to Tauranga via Waihi & Katikati.
This is your weekend to do as much as you like or as little as you wish.
If you are considering alternative activities – please let us know and we will prearrange these for you.
