Auckland – is our largest city in NZ, with a population of over 1.5 million. Auckland’s waterside location has fostered the locals’ love affair with the sea, earning the nickname “City of Sails”.
Auckland sprawls over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours. A cloak of rainforest covers the surrounding hills, dozens of dormant volcanic cones dot the landscape and enchanting holiday islands are scattered throughout the vast Hauraki Gulf. Two of the best island getaways are Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island. It serves as a major embarkation port for many Cruise Ships along with being a major stopover port for cruise ships from the outer Pacific. One of the things that makes Auckland so special is our vibrant melting pot of cultures. This diversity is reflected in our cuisine, festivals, art, music, and cultures. From the first Māori waka (canoes) and colonial ships, Auckland has attracted people of many cultures from far and wide. By the 1890s, the city had a cosmopolitan flavour with dozens of languages being heard in the bustling streets with new inhabitants from Europe, China and India. This theme continued throughout the 20th century, particularly in the 1950s when the population was boosted by the post-World War II ‘baby boom’ and many European immigrants from Hungary, Holland and Yugoslavia, later arrived bringing Auckland even more diversity.
Today we want to take you on tour of this vibrant region and expose you to some of our fantastic scenery and cultures whilst we follow the steps on some of our early pioneers. View our Auckland Day tour Option for cruise ship passengers:
