Your tour departs Napier i-site and includes a drive through Napier’s Art Deco precinct. The Precinct is part of the central business district of the City of Napier. The township was originally surveyed and laid out in the 1850s, but most of the town centre was destroyed on 3 February 1931 by a major earthquake and resulting fires. The Hawke’s Bay earthquake not only destroyed the centre of Napier, but caused radical changes to the surrounding landscape. This destruction resulted in a massive reconstruction of the town centre over the next two years and Napier became New Zealand’s (and indeed the world’s) newest city with its own Southern Hemisphere version of Art Deco style. The new city centre was limited to one or two storeys and the buildings were decorated with low relief ornamentation. The precinct has been registered as a Historic Area under the Historic Places Act 1993, and is now iconic to New Zealand.

After viewing some of these fine old buildings and architecture you will head along the coast to sample some of Hawkes Bay’s best wines. The Hawkes Bay being the oldest wine growing region in New Zealand, and is New Zealands leader for producing the best red wines. The climate is very similar to Bordeaux in France. The region also produces a large quantity of award quality Chardonnay.

We then venture up Te Mata Peak, at 399 m above sea level gives 360° views of the surrounding Heretaunga Plains .For all you photographers this is a wonderful photo opportunity and for those of you who are interested in local folklore you will hear the Maori legend which belongs to this majestic peak. You will be impressed with the views, the unique flora & fauna and amazing limestone cliffs.

From there we pass through Havelock North Village to The Strawberry Patch for a free sample of freshly picked Strawberries and / or buy yourself a Real fruit ice-cream.

We then head through Art Deco Hastings to view historic buildings rebuilt after the 1931 Earthquake. The architecture here in Hastings is stunning.

Sadly time has run short and you will be returned to your ship via some beautiful countryside and Ahuriri (The Old Napier Port) before dropping you off dockside.
